In the midst of hard economic times, is crucial that we take part in the debate. How our government spends money circumscribes how much money goes into our bank account. The less money we have in our pocket, translates to less that we can give to those who are in much more impoverished situations than we are. The national debt as of 09/03/09 is estimated at 11.7 Trillion dollars. That number is hard for many of us even to entertain, yet alone fathom. Many times we take for granted how much is being wasted because we have been so spoiled here in America. We wasted so much, from food to money to time, yet there are people all around us that would literally kill to have our scraps, the leftovers. It is time for America to tighten it’s spending belt and get down to business. Just to put our national debt into perspective, here is a video the demonstrates what you could buy with a Trillion dollars.

When we think of poverty in america, we often think of a shaggy bearded man who has tried drowning his problems in liquor, or one who begs for spare pocket change on a city street. Yet, poverty even has stretched it’s long hand over the faces of innocent children. Have a look.

It is really quite shocking how bad the living conditions are for certain people right here in America. America, from it’s founding, has always stood as the land of hope and opportunity. Yet somehow there still are people falling through the cracks of society into the depths of poverty.

“…The annual release of federal statistics on poverty rates and the number of Americans without medical insurance occurs like clock work. Today’s release of the 2007 statistics highlights two short term developments: the poverty rate is essentially unchanged and the number of individuals without health care has modestly declined. At this particular moment, timing is everything. These statistics do not capture the last 12 months of economic turmoil felt by millions of Americans. The decline in the housing market and the rise in the price of oil are impacting America’s low wealth families in powerful ways. Statistics from the Center for American Progress, portend a dark near term future for America’s families….”
